The US Embassy in Mayfair is set to be converted into a luxury 137 room hotel with ancillary facilities according to new plans submitted to the Westminster council on behalf of the Qatari owners. The floorspace is expected to double increasing from the current 24,000 sqm to the proposed 46,400 sqm.
The site is located at 30 Grosvenor Square within the Mayfair Conservation Area and includes the ‘U’ shaped building occupying the western side of Grosvenor Square. The building was constructed in 1960 and has housed The London Chancery for the Embassy of the United States of America since this time. It is currently envisaged that the development proposal for which planning permission is being sought will mainly comprise of the creation of a world-class hotel providing 137 hotel rooms, ancillary event spaces, hotel spa/leisure facilities, a ballroom and back of house facilities. The whole project in Grosvenor square is likely to cost £1billion.
