Chelsea FC have today announced that they have submitted a planning application to rebuild Stamford Bridge into a 60,000-seat stadium. In a statement on the club’s official website the club confirmed that “a planning application for a new stadium at Stamford Bridge with an expanded seating capacity has been submitted” . “This follows a successful consultation process during which we received very helpful feedback.”
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who bought the club in 2003, would finance the work, which has an estimated cost of £500 million.
Abramovich had initially considered seeking a permanent new home for the club, but then decided to redevelop its current ground because of a lack of suitable sites available in London – having had a bid to build a new stadium in Battersea Power Station rejected.
It is estimated that the project will take three years to complete so in the meantime the Blues will need to find a temporary home.
