Work on the deconstruction of the Earls Court exhibition centre has begun. This was announced by Capco (Capital & Countries Properties plc) who are behind the £8billion development in a letter sent to local residents earlier this week.
The Earls Court project includes a tract of land covering 77 acres on the western edge of central London. It spans the boundaries of the boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea and its borders run along Warwick Road to the east, Lillie Road to the south, North End Road to the west and West Cromwell Road (the A4) to the north. The Master plan which was formally granted outline permission in 2013, proposes the transformation of the Earls Court Project Area into four new urban villages and a High Street which will include around 7,500 new homes and is set to generate up to 10,000 new jobs. The permission also includes a Section 106 agreement which stipulates the improvement of a number of civil amenities, the upgrading of transport links, and the construction of 1,500 affordable homes.
This project will certainly add a lot of value to the area once finished, however it will take some 20 years. Inevitably properties in very close proximity of the project will be affected by the ongoing works. Other areas however such as the garden squares east of Earls Court road will benefit most, particularly in the longer term due to the planned improvements to the local infrastructure and transport links. Further updates will follow as works gets underway.
